Co-Parenting Tips for a Successful Holiday Season

Make the Season Smoother

The holiday season is in full swing, and co-parents may be having a difficult time managing all of the holiday activities with their children. It’s important to be on top of your game, especially during this time of year.

Here are some co-parenting tips that can help you and your children have an excellent holiday season.

Put Your Child First

Above any other tip you could receive, your child must come first. This might sound like a given, but it can be easy to allow your own desires as a co-parent to supersede those of your children. Your children may remember the holidays they spend with you and your co-parent for years to come; what kind of memory will they have of this season?

Keep Communication Open

Communication is the key to making anything work, especially co-parenting after a divorce. This does not end when the holiday season begins; in fact, it’s more important now than ever to communicate effectively with your co-parent. Schedules may change or gatherings may need to occur, and you may want to be sure that you don’t buy the same present for your child that your co-parent does. When in doubt, communicate with your co-parent sooner rather than later.

Plan, Plan, Plan

You can never plan too early or too much. You and your co-parent should sit down and plan as much as you can with the goal of your child’s happiness at the forefront. Know, however, that something could happen that would render your plan unusable; in these situations, be open to change and don’t let the change frustrate you.

Be Flexible

Changes will happen, both throughout the holiday season and in everyday life. It’s very easy to let yourself feel frustrated with changes outside of your control; however, don’t let changes ruin your or your child’s good time. Be open to changes as they happen, and communicate these changes with your co-parent as soon as you can.
