Handling Changes in a Child’s Schedule

|

Adapting and Planning Ahead For Your Children

As the school year progresses, it’s normal for a child’s schedule to change from time to time, whether it be to sports practice or other afterschool activities. As co-parents, however, you may find it frustrating and struggle with adapting your schedule to accommodate your children.

Fortunately, following these tips might help you as you work to meet your children’s needs.

Keep Calm

It’s very easy to get frustrated when something unplanned interrupts your regularly scheduled activities, especially when that something is outside of your control. Remember, though, that while the change in schedule may cause a slight headache at first, your child might be participating in an activity that they’ve wanted to be a part of for some time. The change may even be a result of something that isn’t your child’s fault.

If you feel yourself getting frustrated and want to complain, you should instead keep those feelings inside and work to meet the needs of your child.

Communicate Changes With Each Other

If a change occurs in your child’s schedule, you should communicate that change with your co-parent as soon as possible. Early communication allows the two of you to come up with a plan to meet this new obligation with a smooth transition, whether you need to adjust a pickup/dropoff time or have to find a new location to transition your child from one parent’s custody to the other.

Be Flexible

The changes in your child’s schedule might conflict with something you might already have planned. You and your co-parent should be flexible to the changes as best as possible in order to accommodate for the new event in your child’s schedule. Be willing to adjust locations, times, and whatever else you may have originally had planned to make the schedule transition as easy as possible.

Working Through Custody Issues

If you are having issues with your current custody agreement or your spouse is making visitation difficult, it’s important to speak with an experienced family law attorney as early as possible to put those issues to rest.
